On the 17th March 2008, JRI hosted the launch of the MIHR® system. A large crowd of surgeons, doctors and engineers gathered at the Royal College of Physicians......
Situated at the Spire Little Aston site in Sutton Coldfield, the MIS centre offers services which now fully sanction....
The MIHR® implants and instrumentation are the first of their kind designed from initial concept specifically for the MIS and the surgical technique offers surgeons several distinct advantages in that the implants are deliverable as an open surgery procedure, can be implanted virtually assistant free and require no fixed operating table devices. They offer the added advantage to the surgeon in ease of use by way of a low profile retraction system where no retracting component protrudes more than 2.5cm above skin level.
A driving force behind the Comis MIHR® product development has been the Company's close collaboration with Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Chana.
After qualifying in medicine in 1975, Mr Chana has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Birmingham since 1990, currently working at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham since 1997. By 2001, he had carried out over 1000 hip resurfacing procedures using open approach.
In response to developing minimally invasive operative techniques and increasing demands of both patients and healthcare providers, Mr Chana started working on the concept of minimally invasive hip and hip resurfacing in 2001 when the 'Chana' reamer handle was patented.
This operative technique follows Mr Chana's own surgical approach for minimally invasive hip resurfacing which he has developed along with all the instrumentation necessary for minimally invasive resurfacing, including a near assistant-free retraction system, targeting devices and a MIS acetabular impactor. He has driven the development of the MIHR (Minimally Invasive Hip Resurfacing) implant with Comis Orthopaedics which is to be used alongside this technique.
Mr Chana has personally carried out over 550 operations using the minimally invasive approach for both resurfacing and total hip replacements. He has presented his work globally, including orthopaedic meetings in the UK, South Africa, Canada, Australia, China, Spain, Italy and India.
Comis Orthopaedics Ltd is now ready to offer this experience, products and procedures to surgeons worldwide.
